Smudging is an ancient tradition that involves the burning of herbs or incense to create smoke that is used to purify and cleanse a space or an individual. This practice, also known as smoke medicine, is held in common by many cultures and is believed to clear negative energy and make room for positive energy to flow. Just as we clean our physical space, many believe that it is equally important to clear our energetic space.
For thousands of years smudging has been a part of Native American tradition. Smudging involves the burning of herbs such as sage, cedar, or sweetgrass. These herbs are thought to have cleansing properties that can purify the air and promote positive energy. The smoke medicine creates a sense of calm and peace, often used to bless a space. Please note, this is not a full list of herbs used for smudging.
Today, smudge sticks and supplies are readily available, but it's important to remember and respect the tribal and family rules and teachings when it comes to gathering these sacred herbs. These rules were put in place to protect and allocate the precious resources. The collector had a responsibility towards the plants, praying before gathering, asking the plants permission to gather and words of thanks for what was gathered. By honoring these traditions, we can ensure that the practice of smudging continues to honor the earth and its resources and we can take the lessons of care and respect into our daily lives.
To burn sage for wellness, start by selecting a sage bundle and lighting it with a match or lighter. Once it’s lit, blow out the flame and allow the smoke to cleanse the space. For sweetgrass, braid the grass and light the end, allowing the smoke to fill the room. Similarly, cedar can be lit and used to smudge the space. As you move through your space, you can use a feather or your hand to guide the smoke. My Aunt has shared with me the tradition of burning cedar whenever a family member is ill. She believes in its purifying properties and the ability to rid the home of illness.
Using herbs such as sage can help to purify and cleanse the energy within and around you. If you're looking for a natural way to promote wellness and positive energy, smudging may be just that to help you find a little balance and harmony.
When burning these herbs, always be sure to open windows for ventilation and use a fireproof dish to catch any falling embers. It’s also important to exercise caution and make sure the bundle is fully extinguished after use.
